As soon as the electrification to Ipswich opened in 1985, electric haulage of inter-regional container traffic to and from Ipswich, via the West Coast Main Line and London, began. Class 86 locos working in pairs were soon joined by Class 90's working solo. Liveries have ranged from the Intercity "Raspberry Ripple" through Freightliner grey to the current Freightliner green, but the latter transition has been slow and grey/green pairings are still common.
